Babalu Goes Blue for Autism

Babalu Goes Blue for Autism

Eat Jackson – April 2016

The month of April is National Autism Awareness Month, and Babalu is helping to bring awareness to this at all four of their restaurants across the Southeast. If you’ve noticed the blue lights around one of Jackson’s best patios or inside at Babalu’s Fondren location, the color blue is universally recognized in the autism community as a sign of support. Many individuals who suffer from autism are aware that the blue lights are a sign of support for them in the similar way that the color pink is widely recognized as a show of support for breast cancer awareness and support.

In addition to providing community awareness, Babalu will be giving back to local charities through their BABA Blue drink promotion. Throughout this week (April 11-17, 2016), Babalu Jackson will donate $1 for every BABA Blue cocktail sold to local autism non-profit, the Mississippi Parent Training and Information Center (MSPTI). Similar charities are being supported at their locations in Birmingham, Memphis, and Knoxville.

Lucky for all of us in the Jackson area, Babalu Chef Cristian Rodriguez is rolling out new brunch items this weekend. For your sweet tooth, we recommend the Tortijas, a Spanish inspired dish that are basically the biggest, fluffiest sourdough French Toast you’ve ever had topped with a blackberry molasses syrup and citrus whipped cream. The Tacos Desayuno and Tortilla Espanola are breakfast versions of the classics that manage to expertly scratch both the brunch and Hispanic food itch. All of the new items were incredibly well done, but the Chilaquiles was especially delicious and unique. It is a bowl of their house chips cooked with braised pork and Chihuahua cheese.  All of that deliciousness is tossed with a salsa roja (tomato and chili salsa) and topped with a farm fresh fried egg and cumin crema (homemade slightly more sour and salty version of sour cream with a smoky flavor from the cumin).

Make a point to visit Babalu in Fondren this week to Babalu to do something good for others (and yourself) by ordering the BABA Blue.
